Upon defeating Phrike, this boss will drop a Crimson Key at the location of their death. They always come in twos and there’s a high chance that while you’re trying to dodge those, Phrike will rush you for a melee attack to be prepared for that. These expand outwardly and you’ll need to jump over them or dash out of their way, all while dodging the red projectiles Phrike will be shooting at you at the same time.Īnother new move is a set of red rings that spread outwardly from the bottom of Phrike. One new move in the third phase is that Phrike will release orange orbs in a circular (but not circle-complete) pattern at his feet. When they shoot purple streams of orbs at you, there’s more purple orbs than ever before. When they fire orange orbs into the air, the amount of orbs is basically tripled. Phrike will continue to use their same set of moves in Phase Three (the third of three health bars) except everything will be amplified. This does a ton of damage so be sure to dodge left or right out of Phrike’s way to dodge it. They’ll rush and charge at you, attempting to hit you with a melee attack. When you see that happening, run backwards away from them. You’ll see them charging it up briefly before using it. They have two new moves during this phase: Phrike will release a burst of red lightning. Right off the bat, you should know that Phrike will use his laser beam slash more often so keep an eye out for this. Don’t let them come up beneath you as this could damage you. Watch his orange glow underneath the fog to learn where he’ll be going. Dash left or right away from this laser beam.Īfter this, Phrike will likely drop down low and hide beneath the fog. It starts on teh ground before Phrike quickly slashes it up into the sky. One of Phrike’s strongest moves in this phase is a red laser beam they shoot forward. We recommend dodging away from them while also dodging the orange orbs from above as well. These come in a straight line and have a slight following effect. While this is is happening, Phrike will shoot a stream of purple projectiles at you. These will quickly spread out and rain down from above - don’t let them hit you. Phrike usually shoots these in successions of two or three at you so keep your finger on the dodge button to stay prepared.Īfter that, he’ll shoot a large number of orange orbs into the air above you. Strafe left or right to dodge them and dash away if they get to close. They’ll start by shooting a large number of red, homing projectiles at you. This stands true throughout all three phases of the boss fight. You can shoot any section of their body to do damage, of course, but shots to the head do more damage. Throughout the entire fight, the best way to damage Phrike is by shooting at their head. Below, we'll give tell you what to look out for in each phase to help you advance to the next. Phrike has three main phases to watch out for, as indicated by Phrike's three health bars. They're unlike any of the other enemies in the game, but fortunately, once you defeat Phrike, you'll no longer need to fight them - even if you die after defeating them. Phrike is the first boss in Returnal and packs quite a punch compared to the other enemies you've already fought in the Overgrown Ruins biome of the game. Here's How to Beat Phrike in the Overgrown Ruins
